The Chub Rub Patch is a wearable patch that is specially designed to prevent painful thigh chafing. The company which produces the Chub Rub Patch is located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Chub Rub Patches are made of hypoallergenic materials, and they are latex free. The patches are also designed to be sweat-proof, so you can wear it even while you are exercising or playing sports.
Who created the Chub Rub Patch?
Brittany Lammon, the creator of the Chub Rub Patch is from Ohio, where she attended the Ohio State School of Cosmetology, as well as the Cosmix School of Make-up Artistry. After receiving her licensure, Brittany was invited to teach at The Academy of Glam in South Florida. Brittany has worked with many high-end clients, and her work has been featured on CNN, MSNBC, Golf Magazine, Coors light advertisements, independent movies, as well as various music videos.
Brittany has spent the last four years traveling throughout the United States working with the WWE, World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. Prior to founding Chub Rub, Brittany was granted a US patent for a revolutionary hair tool which she created. She initially produced this tool as the solution to common problems hair stylists encounter, and she has since focused on creating, developing, and marketing new and innovative products.
How did the Chub Rub Patch get started?
Chub Rub Founder Brittany Lammon shared the genesis for her Chub Rub idea on the Inventor Helping Inventors podcast. During the podcast interview, Brittany said the idea came to her after she and her sister attended a Miami Dolphins football game on a hot, 90 degree day in southern Florida.
While they were at the game, Brittany and her sister stood in a long line for one of the porta-potties, and after her sister went into the porta-potty, Brittany started to become worried, both because her sister was in the potty for a long time, and because all of the people in line were looking at her pretty severely. Brittany finally knocked and asked her sister if she was OK, and when her sister came out, she was dripping sweat and very pale.
Brittany asked sis what was wrong, and her sister told her that it took her so long because she was wearing really tight undergarments which were too constricting, and just to get them down to use the bathroom and then pull them back up, she had nearly passed out because it was so hot in the porta-potty. The sisters began talking, and Brittany learned that her sister wore the really tight undergarments solely in order to prevent her thighs from rubbing together in the heat, resulting in painful chafing.
Brittany had also experienced chaffing of her thighs, and she figured that this must be a fairly common problem, so she decided to do some research to find out what was available to combat this painful chub rub, and when she didn’t find anything that she thought would work for everyday use, she decided to invent something herself, and the Chub Rub Patch was born.
What happened to the Chub Rub Patch before Shark Tank?
After Chub Rub founder Britanny Lammon came up with her idea for the Chub Rub Patch, and then worked the patch through the product development stages, she managed to get a solid marketing start when Chub Rub TikTok videos garnered some 22 million views.
When Brittany entered the Tank, the company had been trading for about a year, and they had sales revenues of $105k to date. The company had been selling their product online, direct to consumer. During her time in the Tank, Brittany told the Sharks that she was seeking a $200k investment from a Shark, mostly to be used for marketing, including buying Facebook ads and more influencer marketing for Instagram and other platforms.
What do customers think of the Chub Rub Patch?
It appears that the Chub Rub Patch was made available on Amazon in early 2023, and thus far, the product has 455 ratings, with customers giving the patches an average rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars. A little more than half of reviewers rated the product at 4 or 5 stars while 31% gave the product only 1 or 2 stars.
What are customers saying about the Chub Rub Patch?
One happy Chub Rub purchaser described the patches as a “Summer necessity,” saying, “Stays on all day and night with no peeling or lifting up. It’s nice not to worry about adjusting placement, like with cloth thigh savers!”
Another satisfied Chub Rub user wrote, “I wore these while walking around downtown Tampa, and they saved my thighs from being irritated at the end of the day. Next time I will order in a darker color so they blend in with my skin better.”
With nearly a third of all reviewers rating the patches at just 1 or 2 stars, we found a fairly significant number of critical reviews. One disappointed Chub Rub user titled their review, ‘Will Rip Your Skin Off.’ This user stated: “Had such high hopes, but if not placed perfectly, the edges will roll, and it ripped my skin off when removing and left me with a painful rash.”
Another unhappy Amazon purchaser wrote, “Wore these under a dress on a hot and humid day, and they made it a block in NYC before the edges crumbled. I had to pull them off because they were hanging by the third block. I followed all the instructions, made sure I applied on clean, dry thighs, and they disintegrated. If you’re a plus-size gal hoping these will save you from chub rub shorts showing in a short dress, think again. Guess I’ll try again in winter since they can’t take the heat.”
When did the Chub Rub Patch appear on Shark Tank?
The Chub Rub Patch appeared on Shark Tank in Season 14, Episode 14, which aired on February 17th, 2023. The Chub Rub founder pitched to regular Sharks Mark Cuban, Lori Greiner, Kevin O’Leary, Robert Herjavec, and Guest Shark Emma Grede, co-founder of lifestyle fashion brand Good American.
Along with the Chub Rub Patch, Season 14 of Shark Tank saw a number of products which were designed to help deal with somewhat unpleasant health and beauty challenges. One successful pitch in this category was Kudos Diapers.
What happened to the Chub Rub Patch on Shark Tank?
Chub Rub founder Brittany Lammon began her pitch with a simple question, “Sharks, do you know what chub rub is? Let me tell you from first hand, or first thigh experience. It is awful. Chub Rub happens when your thighs rub together and chaff, causing a nasty, painful rash in between your thighs.”
At this point, Brittany displayed several large photos of severe cases of chub rub, and the Sharks looked genuinely grossed out by the pictures, some turning their heads away from the photos. She then continued to explain to the Sharks that “No one wants to deal with this while out trying to have a good time!”
Brittany then stated that her creation, the Chub Rub Patch, is lightweight, easy to apply, can be worn all day, and the product effectively solves the common problem of chafing. Interestingly, two of the male Sharks were the first to speak up and admit that they had suffered from chub rub.
Robert, a runner, explained that he had “these massive running legs, and they rub together all of the time.” Mark Cuban then piped up to say, “In my more Rubenesque days, when I would play basketball, I would have the same thing happen.”
For some reason, throughout this entire episode, in a rarity for Shark Tank, it felt that this pitch had been significantly edited in such a way as to make it feel a little disjointed. It is one of the shorter episodes, so perhaps the producers were dealing with a really tight time constraint here. However, while the other male Sharks were discussing their adventures with chub rub, the action cuts to Mr. Wonderful saying, “You must have sold a lot of Chub Rub?”
Brittany told O’Leary that they had been in business for about a year and had $105k in sales. Mark followed up by asking for the retail price, and he learned that the patches sold for $8.99, and they cost the company $2.12 landed.
Mr. Wonderful jumped back in to ask if the patches were a one-time use or could be used over and over, and Brittany informed him that they were a one-time use, but could be worn for 3-4 days. Lori Greiner then asked Britanny about how she came up with the product, and she learned that Brittany works for WWE, professional wrestling, as a stylist and make-up artist, and chub rub was a common problem among the larger wrestlers when they were working out.
Emma Grede then spoke up to indicate that this was a product that was screaming out for influencer marketing, but she really didn’t like the name Chub Rub because “It feels yucky.” Mark responded to this jokingly stating, “My name is Mark Cuban, and I’m a member of the Chub Rub club.”
Kevin O’Leary rejoined the questioning and asked Brittanny what she planned to do with a $200k investment, and she replied that she would spend the money on more marketing, particularly Facebook ads and more influencer marketing.
Staying with the product theme, Robert then jokingly told Kevin that he often “rubbed people the wrong way,” and after a few more light-hearted comments among the Sharks, at least one Shark looked ready to announce his intentions.
Did the Chub Rub Patch get a deal on Shark Tank?
Chub Rub founder Brittany Lammon was unable to convince a Shark to invest $200k in her new business, so Chub Rub left the Tank without a deal.
Mr. Wonderful was first to declare his decision when he said, “$200k for 30%. I think you’re too early. Getting back the $200k might be tough. I just want to be clear and transparent about it, and I don’t want any friction . . .”
Mark Cuban spoke up next, and he told Brittanny that her 22 million TikTok views were not just about the product; they were about the name, the fun. But, Mark said that when he’s working out, or the Mavs trainers were working with the players, they just used Vaseline, so he didn’t see an investment here.
Robert followed Mark to the exit stating that some products were just not meant for a large-scale investment, so he did not believe that Chub Rub would get really big. Lori Greiner quickly followed Robert, and she said simply, “Brittany, you don’t always need to take on an investor, that brings a lot of responsibility.”
Finally, Guest Shark Emma Grede spoke up to say, “I’m sorry, it’s just not an investable option for me.” Brittany, however, did not allow Emma to bow out without comment, as she told Emma that she thought a deal with her would be a great fit because Kim Kardashian has a breast tape product.
Since Brittany followed up even with all five Sharks out, Robert said, “Wow, Brittany, you have no quit in you!” Emma responded to this by saying that she’s right to have no quit, and that Brittany was thinking along the right lines in wanting to find some alignment with other brands that could help her to sell the product.
Brittany finally left the Tank without a deal, but she still appeared confident that the Chub Rub Patch would be successful.
The Chub Rub Patch Shark Tank update, what happened next?
Several months after the Chub Rub Patch Shark Tank episode aired, founder Brittany Lammon appeared on I Heart Radio’s Spreaker podcast. In her interview, Brittany described a number of positive Shark Tank effects that the business has experienced since her episode aired.
First, Brittany told Spreaker that her episode originally aired in the winter, in February, which is the slowest sales season for her product, and while they did have additional sales after airing, she was really surprised that when the Chub Rub episode was rebroadcast in the summer, they experienced an even larger boost in sales.
Brittany also disclosed that there is a private online Shark Tank group, which is just for founders whose businesses made it to the air, and she said that she had learned a great deal and had made many valuable contacts while participating in this group.
During the I Heart interview, Brittany also revealed that she was working on the Chub Rub Patch 2.0, an improved version of the original product, and also that after her episode aired, she had been contacted by a number of potential investors.
We will look to see if the Chub Rub Patch is, in the future, able to make the leap from online sales to major retailers, as this seems the most natural path for the company to experience significant growth.
